National Rally Expels Police Officer from Security Team Following Leaked Racist Video

France’s prominent far-right party, the National Rally, has expelled a police officer from its organization and dismissed him from its internal security team after body camera footage surfaced showing him delivering a series of racist, homophobic, and sexist remarks. The incident has triggered significant public backlash and placed renewed scrutiny on the party’s ongoing efforts to sanitize its public image ahead of the country's upcoming presidential election.

The controversial footage, which dates back to November of last year, was recorded in the southern French city of Carcassonne. The video captured on-duty conversations between law enforcement officers and was made public on Tuesday after being published by the regional daily newspaper Midi Libre.

According to the published recording, the officer who spoke most frequently was identified as a member of the National Rally’s private security detail. While on duty, the officer repeatedly used disparaging and derogatory language aimed at individuals perceived to be of African or North African descent, alongside multiple homophobic and misogynistic statements made during discussions with fellow officers.

The revelation quickly sparked a fierce backlash, prompting the National Rally leadership to take immediate disciplinary action on Wednesday. Party officials issued a statement denouncing the officer's recorded comments in the strongest possible terms, emphasizing that the statements were criminally punishable and completely incompatible with the stated values and principles of the political organization.

In response to the public outcry, the party confirmed that the officer was instantaneously removed from his duties within the security personnel and formally ejected from the ranks of the National Rally. The rapid expulsion highlights the party's sensitivity to controversies that could undermine its national political platform.

The legal fallout from the broadcast footage has also begun to mount in southern France. The public prosecutor's office in Carcassonne announced that it has formally launched an investigation into the recorded remarks, though authorities have not yet released additional details concerning the specific scope or charges of the inquiry.

The emergence of the video prompted swift condemnation from members of President Emmanuel Macron’s administration. Aurore Bergé, the government minister responsible for equality, sharply criticized the recorded behavior, describing the officer’s remarks as absolutely unacceptable for anyone serving in uniform or public life.

Opposition figures also seized on the scandal to question the National Rally's fitness for national leadership. Former prime minister Gabriel Attal, who has officially launched his own campaign for next year’s presidential race, shared the recorded footage on the social media platform X. In his post, Attal warned voters that the video offered a preview of how the country would be governed under the far right, arguing that it demonstrated unrestrained and encouraged hatred.

The controversy comes at a delicate time for the National Rally, which is gearing up for next spring's presidential vote with high hopes of capturing the Élysée Palace. The party's longtime figurehead, Marine Le Pen, is preparing to launch her fourth presidential bid as she seeks to capitalize on shifting political dynamics across France.

For years, Le Pen has executed a deliberate campaign aimed at softening the public image of the anti-immigration party that she inherited from her father. The strategy was designed to make the movement more palatable to mainstream voters and expand its electoral reach beyond its traditional hardline base.

Current polling indicates that Le Pen’s repositioning efforts have gained significant traction among the electorate. Surveys show her leading projections for the first round of the presidential vote next spring, positioning her as a formidable contender capable of posing a major threat to any political opponent in the decisive second-round runoff.

Despite her favorable polling numbers, Le Pen faces considerable hurdles on the campaign trail, particularly regarding her ongoing legal difficulties. In July, an appeals court upheld a prior graft conviction against her, a judicial ruling that she is currently seeking to overturn through an appeal before France's highest court.

The bodycam incident in Carcassonne also surfaces amid broader concerns regarding the rise of discriminatory rhetoric across the nation. In April, human rights organization Amnesty International issued a warning regarding a worrying surge in public racist comments and mounting challenges directed against the rule of law in France.

A series of racially charged incidents have made headlines across the French political landscape in recent months. Bally Bagayoko, who took office as the new Black mayor of Paris’s largest suburban municipality, became the target of an intense far-right hate campaign.

In addition, the hard-left political party France Unbowed revealed earlier this year that several of its Black parliamentarians had been subjected to severe racial harassment. The targeted lawmakers included a deputy speaker of the French National Assembly, all of whom were sent threatening and racially abusive letters.

As the presidential campaign accelerates, the swift expulsion of the security officer demonstrates the National Rally's determination to contain any controversies linked to its extremist past. Nevertheless, the incident has reignited heated national debates over the party's true internal culture as it vies for the nation's highest office.
