Samuel Eto'o Pledges Full African Support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA Re-Election Bid

Cameroonian Football Federation President Samuel Eto'o has mounted a firm defense of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, pledging his vote and vowing to rally the entire African continent behind the global football chief’s re-election campaign despite rising opposition from European football authorities.

In an interview with FRANCE 24, the former international striker praised Infantino’s tenure, asserting that the incumbent president has delivered unprecedented support and development initiatives to African football. His endorsement comes at a critical juncture as Infantino faces intensified scrutiny and mounting political pushback across Europe ahead of the upcoming FIFA congress.

Infantino is seeking another mandate at the helm of world football's governing body, a contest that requires securing a simple majority among FIFA’s 211 member associations. With 54 voting federations within the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continent represents a decisive voting bloc capable of heavily influencing the final electoral outcome.

Eto'o indicated that he would actively lobby fellow football association leaders across the continent to deliver an undivided front. He stated that if he remains in his current role, he will cast Cameroon’s ballot for Infantino and campaign vigorously to ensure all 54 African member federations unite in backing the FIFA president’s continuity.

Addressing the stark divide between European and African perspectives, Eto'o argued that administrators on both continents operate under vastly different financial and structural realities. He noted that while African federations are expected to compete with the world's leading footballing powerhouses, they must do so under severe budgetary constraints that European or South American counterparts rarely experience.

Consequently, Eto'o maintained that African representatives must prioritize their own developmental needs when evaluating FIFA's leadership. Commenting on the legal challenges and mounting complaints originating from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), he noted that it is entirely natural for European administrators to defend their specific interests, just as it is necessary for African officials to safeguard theirs.

The Cameroonian football leader also reflected on his personal rapport with Infantino, describing the FIFA chief as a trusted collaborator, friend, and elder brother. Eto'o highlighted their shared history of working together on strategic projects designed to elevate the global game and strengthen football infrastructures.

However, support for Infantino is not entirely unanimous across Africa. Constant Omari, the former president of the Congolese Football Federation, has publicly demanded Infantino's resignation. Omari has accused African football administrators of moral compromises and suggested that the FIFA leadership maintains leverage over continental federations through compromising records.

Eto'o dismissed these accusations, underscoring that he remains fully aligned behind Infantino. He stated that during his time engaged with FIFA, he has never witnessed discussions conducted under duress or threats, directly rejecting Omari's assertions regarding administrative intimidation.

At the same time, Eto'o acknowledged that governance within the African continent has experienced its own internal frictions. He noted that while working within CAF, he has not always seen eye-to-eye with the continental administration or its incumbent leadership under CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

The broader governance landscape in African football is already looking toward future transitions, following Motsepe’s recent announcement that he will not pursue another term as CAF president in 2029. When questioned about whether he harbors personal ambitions to lead the continental governing body, Eto'o downplayed immediate aspirations for higher office.

Instead, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward insisted he remains entirely dedicated to his responsibilities at the Cameroonian Football Federation. He emphasized that significant challenges remain in restructuring national football operations and that his focus remains on securing sustained success for Cameroon on the pitch.

On the competitive front, Eto'o commended the performance of Cameroon's national women's team, the Lionnes Indomptables, celebrating their historic campaign at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. He underscored that Cameroon enters international competitions not merely to participate or secure qualification, but to contend for major trophies.

Eto'o also addressed ongoing domestic administrative concerns, including long-standing tensions with Cameroon's Sports Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi and persistent discussions surrounding unpaid wages for players. Downplaying suggestions of severe friction, Eto'o maintained that the federation has established a disciplined and calm working environment necessary for national teams to deliver tangible sporting results.

As the date of the FIFA elective congress approaches, Eto'o's vocal backing signals that Africa is poised to serve as Infantino's most vital political stronghold, creating a sharp continental contrast against the legal battles and institutional opposition emerging from Europe.
